Pittsburgh Farmer’s Markets Make Getting Local Produce Easy

Pittsburgh Farmers Market

When you live in an apartment, you tend to do a lot of local shopping. The more things you visit within walking distance, the easier it is to trim your gas or public transit costs.

But just because you want to keep your costs down, doesn't mean you don't want to eat well, too. And that can include shopping for local produce at great prices.

Fortunately, Pittsburgh Citiparks makes this easy, with a number of conveniently located Farmer's Markets around the city. The parks feature fruit, vegetables, fresh flowers, herbs, cheeses, a variety of baked goods and so much more. The markets most popular with apartment-dwellers in Pittsburgh include:

Cool Southside Pittsburgh Apartment for Rent, Available April

Apartment rentals like this one don't come up too often, but we understand that this second floor South Side gem will be available in April.

Take a look at 2012 East Carson Street. This Pittsburgh apartment is full of taste, style and possibilities. With three bedrooms, it's ideal for grad students or young professionals looking for a safe, clean apartment with some character.

What we like about the place in particular is the way it merges the historic with the new. Recent renovation has added the things that make post-undergrad living so civilized– like the coveted clothes washer and dryer, a new kitchen, a new bath, a dishwasher and a built-in microwave. There's a security system. And upgraded wiring, too, helps transform this Victorian space for modern use.

But there's still that great sense of history in the space with its interesting moldings, sweeping staircase and fireplace details.

Add to all this the fact it's on Pittsburgh's Southside, close to public transit and convenient for anywhere you need to go, and this becomes an exciting opportunity for a discerning renter.

Budget-Conscious Fun for the Pittsburgh Apartment Dweller: Biking in Pittsburgh

Biking in Pittsburgh

So you're renting an apartment or loft in Pittsburgh and you're looking for a fun pastime that won't break your budget. One perfect way to explore our beautiful 'Burgh, have fun with friends, and cut costs while burning those calories is biking.

Pittsburgh's unique topography– a city of bridges, rivers, highways and slopes– may seem challenging at first. But by becoming familiar with the great online biking resources Pittsburgh has to offer, you might just discover how easy it is to enjoy a whole different side of the city– on two wheels. You'll make a difference in the environment– and your health, too!

What kind of rides can you do around the South Side, Oakland, Downtown, North Side, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill areas? Here are just a few suggestions:

Eliza Furnace Trail/Southside Trail Loop
This easy and scenic ride rolls along both shores of the Monongahela and takes from 45 minutes to an hour, covering five to eight miles, skirting Pittsburgh's South Side, Uptown and Downtown. Cross at the Hot Metal and Smithfield Street Bridges to complete the loop.

Point State Park to Northshore Trail
An easy to moderate trail, the Point State Park to Northshore Trail extends from Point State Park to the city's northern trail by using Fort Duquense Walkway along the Fort Duquense Bridge. This run typically takes one-and-a-half to two hours and covers a distance of under six miles.

Mount Washington/South Side Trail
Considered moderately challenging, this trail features the amazing city skyline views that Pittsburgh is known for. Take your bike on the Monongohela or Duquense Inclines on this jaunt to Mount Washington's Grandview Avenue. Curve back around to the Southside Trail. The ride will take approximately one-and-a-half to two hours and covers two-and-a-half miles.

Downtown to Strip District
This easy, scenic trip takes one-and-a-half to two hours, with a run of about four miles. It follows the Allegheny South Trail across from Point State Park, curving along the Allegheny River and ends up in downtown Pittsburgh's cultural district.

Downtown to Oakland
Allow two to three hours for this challenging five to seven mile journey. This trip starts on the Eliza Furnace Trail past the Hot Metal Bridge, but shifts gears to the Panther Hollow Trail and it's uphill all the way to Oakland for a great workout.

Apartments in Pittsburgh Featured Neighborhood: Oakland

Featured Neighborhoods: Oakland

Welcome to Oakland, second in our Featured Neighborhoods series. (If you missed our first Featured Neighborhood post, on the South Side, you can check it out here. )

Chances are, if you've come to Pittsburgh for college or grad school and you're not already familiar with the Oakland section of town, you soon will be.

Oakland is home to several of the cities' largest Universities: the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and Carlow University. Pitt, in particular, sprawls through much of the region, with academic buildings sitting side-by-side with local businesses.

As an extension of the educational facilities in this part of town, Oakland also contains many of the city's major hospitals. It is because of the thriving student and medical professional population that Oakland has become a busy area of little restaurants, quirky boutique shops, and social spots.

Whether you're looking for a quick bite to eat, or to sit down at a well-rated dining establishment, you can find both here. American fare, French, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Middle Eastern and more await.

Take a walk down Craig Street and you'll find a variety of interesting shops to peruse. Whether you're looking for dessert or a hot beverage, you'll discover something that's your cup of tea (or java). And if you're looking for new reading material, the area offers everything from new, rare and antique books to the latest edition of today's hottest comic.

Continue down Craig Street and you'll bump into the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and the Carnegie Music Hall. Check out the collections from mummies to Monet, and decorative tea cups to T-Rex.

Many students live in Oakland, usually in the former single-family residential dwellings that have become popular as off-campus housing. While these apartments can be easy on the wallet, apartment seekers in the Oakland area will want to keep in mind each potential property's safety and parking availability. Both can be a concern for Oakland renters.

But for students and young professionals without cars, Oakland is an important hub for Port Authority buses. Simply pick up a bus on Forbes Avenue, Fifth Avenue or a number of the area's other major routes. Many universities offer shuttle service through Oakland, too.

Oakland: active, convenient and fun!

If you're a young professional or grad student working or studying in the Oakland area, check out the conveniently-located apartments at Five Oaks Realty. With in-apartment security systems, clean, stylish facilities, and quick access to campus or your office, you might just decide to make Pittsburgh your permanent new home!
